Making pleasant memories

In addition to maintaining the charm of the cottages, JoAnn says her goal is to add a cultural dimension to the Briar Patch experience. "We've had some classes and small workshops and we've developed a music program," she said. "That's the type of thing we'd like to continue. "The last two summers we've been fortunate to have a couple of classical musicians stay here from June through August. They are a delightful couple who perform with the Arizona Opera orchestra and teach at Phoenix College. They put on concerts about every other Friday night throughout the summer and also play creekside in the morning as the guests enjoy their breakfasts."

I sit at my desk and watch the squirrels and bluejays as I'm working - it's a pleasant place to be," said Ike. "It's not like work at all. "JoAnn works hard at it, though. She thrives on it because it gives her a good feeling to know that people enjoy their stay and the treatment they receive from the staff." "If this is work, it's very enjoyable work," his wife of 40 years added. "This has given us the opportunity to live in a place we love and be involved with something we truly enjoy at the same location. It is rewarding to me to be able to provide an atmosphere that people will enjoy coming to - a place for them to rest and relax, and renew their energies. n "No, this isn't work to me, but part of that is because we have such outstanding people who work here. They are very gracious people who feel good about being a part of our goals. And they have a genuine concern for making each guests feel at home." The Olsons have numerous scrapbooks filled with thank-you notes and letters from guests, yet the greatest compliment a guest can pay is simply to return to Briar Patch for another stay. And they do - time and time again. As my own visit to Briar Patch came to an all-too-rapid close, my husband and I promised each other a return visit - and soon. As we headed down the gravel road to Highway 89A, I recalled one of the comments written in the Briar Patch Inn guest book: "As life's pace accelerates us through the day, we need to find a quiet place in our minds. The memory of Briar Patch Inn is such a place. Once you have experienced its serenity, the memory will always be with you." Yes, Briar patch Inn is a great find - and just what I needed. Now, I can face the world again.
