The original Tin Men started with the wagons moving west on the Oregon Trail. Carrying flat sheets they would make bread boxes to bath tubs or even a mountain tea kettle (whiskey still). To this day The Tin Man uses the same old skills making articles for family and business and we've all had a few stories. One man needed a "peg leg." Yes sir, he told us of mining and standing in water all day long and never having a "cold foot." |
"The Tin Man" Gary Baxter and his sidekick "scrap mental". |

Gary Baxter "The Tin Man" is working in his 35th year in the same shop. Gary's father showed him how to work metal in auto body. Gary created "The Tin Man," in 1995, a 1917 Dodge. Starting with only the cowling Gary hand tooled the rest of the car, from the frame, fenders, and suicide doors, etc.. The car has been a class winner at many of the west coast car shows.
After Gary completed a 4 year apprenticeship under a master craftsman Gary then served his country doing airframe sheet metal and war damage in Vietnam, on helicopters. After Gary's return from the military he went back to work at Valley Metal and Heating in Baker City, Oregon. After many years of working in the business Gary is now one of the owners with Steve Hardrath.
The Company Valley Metal and heating has a 50 year history in Baker City, Oregon. Having started in a location close to the old train depot and finally moving to their current location over 30 years ago.
We have been active in Baker City's downtown restoration. You will notice restoration just like the old days the metal facades in Baker's historic old buildings. Some of these include the Mint Building across from the old Blue and White Cafe. That whole building front is made from flat sheets and hand formed. The last building we renovated was the Falcon Cable Building where many watched us work off lifts to reach the high places.
One of the bigger projects we participated in was the Geiser Grand Hotel. If you look up at the top of the building, you will see many fascinating shapes of tin. We build in Copper, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel, Galvanized, and Cold Rolled Sheet Metals.
We also build custom home decor items mostly in pure copper. From Whiskey Stills to pure copper drinking mugs. If you have a picture of something or an idea for something for your home we can build it!
