The Geiser Grand Hotel, built in 1889 in historic Baker City, Oregon. Built during the gold mining boom the Geiser Grand was the finest hotel between Salt Lake City, Utah and Seattle, Washington. The hotel was designed by Czechoslovakian John Benes and built by the Geiser family whom had acquired their wealth from the Bonanza and other gold mines in the area.
Timber and cattle barons, politicians, dreamers and schemers mixed and mingled here. Fresh Maine Lobster and Green Turtle Soup were among the delicacies served by white gloved waiters in the social center of the region. The Geiser family spared no expense in creating a showcase for the wealth they had acquired.
The building is Italianate Renaissance Revival style of Victorian architecture. The Geiser boasted the third elevator west of the Mississippi River. The first was in the Hotel Jerome in Aspen, Colorado, and the second was in the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, California. The Geiser was one of the first hotels in Oregon to offer electricity, a marvel in it's time. The original light fixtures are gone now, but more than 100 crystal chandeliers glow in the hotel today!
More than seven million dollars was spent on the restoration of the hotel which took five years and was completed in 1998. Exterior architectural features include Romanesque jambs and sashes and extensive decorative tin work done by Valley Metal in Baker City, Oregon.
A signature cupola clock tower rises 110' and is capped by a pitched verdigris roof designed and built by Valley Metal. |
